TOKYO, Japan, January 19, 2021 – Renesas Electronics Group (TSE: 6723), a global supplier of semiconductor solutions, today announced the expansion of its general-purpose 64-bit microprocessor (MPU) RZ/G2 product portfolio for a wide range of applications Provide more powerful AI processing power. The expanded lineup includes three new entry-level MPU models based on the latest Arm® Cortex®-A55 cores: RZ/G2L, RZ/G2LC and RZ/G2UL. Together with the existing mid- to high-end RZ/G2E, RZ/G2N, RZ/G2M and RZ/G2H MPUs, a total of seven RZ/G2 MPUs offer excellent scalability from entry-level to high-end designs.

The new RZ/G2L MPU is built on the Cortex-A55 CPU core, and its processing performance is about 20% higher than that of the previous products using the Cortex-A53 core, and the speed is about 6 times faster in the basic processing of AI applications. In addition, the new MPU integrates a camera input interface, 3D graphics engine and video codec to provide more cost-effective support for complex functions of human-machine interface (HMI) applications such as multimedia processing, GUI rendering and AI image processing. In addition, the MPU features a Cortex-M33 core that enables real-time processing of tasks such as sensor data acquisition without the need for an external microcontroller (MCU), reducing overall system cost.

Part of the RZ/G family, the new entry-level RZ/G2L features data error checking and correction (ECC) protection for both on-chip memory and external DDR memory, as well as a proven Linux software package (VLP) – the industrial-grade Linux comes with the Civil Infrastructure Platform (CIP) Linux kernel, which can achieve support guarantees and security maintenance for more than 10 years, which can greatly reduce future maintenance costs. In addition, support for safety features means customers can also confidently use the RZ/G2L MPU portfolio for industrial applications requiring high reliability and extended life, resulting in faster time-to-market.

For scenarios that may require more complex AI capabilities, Renesas plans to enhance the functionality and performance of the RZ/G2L product group through its proprietary AI accelerator, DRP-AI. Renesas will continue to introduce products with better pin compatibility and software reusability to ease customers’ development burden when adding new product versions to their product lines in the future.

The new MPU samples are on sale today, and mass production is planned to start in August 2021. Customers can start evaluating applications of the RZ/G2L MPU product family as early as possible by accepting pre-orders for evaluation boards and releasing the relevant reference designs (circuit diagrams and board layout data) today. In addition, Renesas is currently developing a power management IC (PMIC) product optimized for the RZ/G2L product group and is scheduled to release it later in 2021.
