Rohde & Schwarz launches Bluetooth 5.2 low energy test solution

The Bluetooth test solution for the R&S CMW platform now supports the new Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) 5.2 power control features. This is also the industry’s only RF test instrument (in air interface mode) that supports the definition of BLE 5.0 scale. This test mode has been adopted by the Bluetooth SIG as a new BLE test method.


The Bluetooth SIG officially adopted the BLE 5.2 specification at the end of 2019. BLE 5.2 provides new power control functions, and Rohde & Schwarz has completed the integration of related test items in the CMW platform Bluetooth test software. In addition, BLE 5.2 will provide extended audio capabilities similar to traditional Bluetooth, and once released, Rohde & Schwarz will also integrate testing of related projects.

New BLE test mode

On the other hand, Rohde & Schwarz is introducing a new BLE test mode based on BLE 5.0, which allows all test items defined by the specification to be completed under OTA, similar to the test mode of traditional Bluetooth. In this test scheme, unlike DTM connections require additional control wires, simplifying the test method. The test time is similar to that under DTM. This new OTA-based BLE test mode has been submitted to the Bluetooth SIG.

The new test mode is based on the R&S CMW platform of the Rohde & Schwarz wireless communication tester and is suitable for R&D and production testing in a test chamber. BLE receiver tests are generally based on PER results. In order to meet the needs of research and development, the R&S CMW additionally provides BER statistics.

Covers all Bluetooth RF test items

R&S CMW can complete all Bluetooth test items, including traditional Bluetooth and Bluetooth low energy 5.2. It can also simulate devices for traditional Bluetooth connection and complete Bluetooth audio testing.

Support for other wireless technologies

The CMW500, CMW290 and CMW270 from Rohde & Schwarz can also be adapted for other wireless technologies. The hardware supports 160MHz analysis bandwidth and can support IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n/ac/ax standards. In addition, CMW also supports Zigbee technology used in smart homes.
